About me

I'm Emmanuelle, an experienced psychodynamic therapist working in the City of London and online. I offer a safe, confidential space where together we can come to a deeper understanding of your difficulties, allowing you to effect lasting change. I am registered with UKCP, BPC and FPC. I adhere to all of these organisations' ethical codes. Alongside my private practice, I have experience of working psychodynamically in the NHS, as part of South London and Maudsley Trust. I have experience counselling primary aged children through Place2Be. I am a qualified secondary school teacher, and have experience working therapeutically with older teens and young adults. I was previously a journalist and I continue to write and edit articles about psychotherapy, which contributes to my continued learning and up-to-date knowledge of best practice.

My approach to individual therapy

I understand that seeking therapy or counselling is a big step. You may be feeling stuck, depressed or anxious, you may have past trauma or painful experiences that still need some attention, or perhaps you wish to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, your identity and your relationships. Whatever you are bringing, you are welcome. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is focused on understanding how early experiences and relationships might continue to affect us and hold us back. A strong therapeutic alliance will allow difficult feelings to be felt and explored safely, which can lead to profound and lasting change. I work with clients on an open-ended basis, or for a fixed number of sessions (usually 12), where there is a particular issue you would like to work on in a focused way.

Our first individual session

Our first 50-minute meeting is an opportunity for you to get a sense of whether you feel comfortable talking to me. I invite you to be as honest and open as feels safe to you, and to trust your feelings about whether I am the right therapist for you. I will be interested to hear what has brought you to therapy now. I will ask questions about what you are experiencing in the present, and about your past and early experiences. I might ask about diagnoses and medications, about your mental health history, and about your relationships and support system. I might take notes (with your permission) during the session itself, which I don't do during ongoing therapy.
